NEW PROJECT // Design Via Dexter

I love reading articles about holiday decorations, shopping guides, and tasty cocktail recipes.  All I want to think about is eating decorating my gold Christmas tree, shopping for gifts, and drinking Holiday Punch; but some of us have to work around here.  And working hard.  I am so blessed to have many great projects to work on, but I’m so busy I haven’t had much time to keep you all updated.

Today, I’m filling you in on one of my current projects.  The client is a young family who found me through Facebook.  The wife contacted me right before closing on their brand new, dream home.  She was feeling overwhelmed after making so many design decisions throughout the building process, and needed help pulling it all together. Basically, her “Dream Home” was becoming a “Nightmare Project”.

No problem, I got this.

Except she wasn’t moving to St. Louis, she was moving to Dexter, MO. And for those of you who don’t know; Dexter, MO is in the middle. Of. Freakin. Nowhere.  Like, the closest Target is an hour away kind of nowhere.

At first, I didn’t really know how to approach the project. In the past I have worked remotely with clients in the past; and in total honestly, they were all busts. But she was so sweet, fun, and openminded that I really wanted to work with her. I mean, THIS is the kitchen that she selected, all on her own!Kitchen 2Kitchen 1Soft blue/green cabinets with GOLD fixtures!!!!! I adore it.  Sort of reminded me of this kitchen designed by Thomas Britt.

Then this is what she has going on in the powder room.

So dang good!

Now, what do I have to work on? Pulling the double living room and dining room together. She had already selected the lighting, paint, flooring, and large furniture pieces.

This is where we started.

Before 3Before 2Before 1The client wanted to add color and pattern to create a fun, child friendly, yet sophisticated home.

This is the inspiration.

Inspiration BoardAnd this is my plan…

Beginning with the fireplace wall…

The built-ins on either side of the fireplace get a lil Kelly Wearstler trellis action plus shelves, a major piece of artwork is being commissioned to go above the mantle, a pair of poppy colored wing backs flank the fireplace, a pair of gourd lamps will live on a sofa table between the sofas, and lots of pattern will make way on drapes, area rugs, and a lot o’ throw pillows.

Heather fireplace wallHere is a little progress picture.Living RoomOn to le TV Wall.  Ohhhhhhhh televisions. Why must you be so necessary, and ugly? The plan is to disguise the wall mounted television as much as possible; so the wall will be painted a dark navy to tone down the TV and a gallery of art and various objects will be installed around it.  Eventually a media cabinet will go beneath.  The entire wall of windows will be home to navy and white horizontal stripped drapes. Heather TV wall 1Lastly the Dining Room, my favorite spaces to decorate. The walls will be home to luscious coraly/dusty red/poppy grasscloth wallpaper. It’s fantastic. A white, lacquered, bamboo, Pagoda shaped mirror is going over the existing buffet, and a zebra rug will lay under the existing table and chairs. Ohh…Dexter, I know it well. My grandma used to work there. There are several really good antique malls there. In case you have some spare time :)

  5. Hi there, I believe your site might be having browser compatibility
problems. Whenever I look at your blog in Safari, it looks fine but when opening in
Internet Explorer, it has some overlapping issues. I just
wanted to provide you with a quick heads up! Apart from that, great blog!
